Competition Program:
Overview:
The square footage of the program has been intentionally omitted. It will be up to the designer to make their best judgment on how big or small their chosen “Pop-Up” should be. While there is no specific site, there should be a thought process on where the “Pop-Up” can be placed,
and how it will impact the community and the surrounding infrastructure.
Being a small scale “master” design, plans and diagramming should be thought of carefully on how to proceed. Jurors will not be as interested in "final" CD quality floor plans as much as they would be with design and conceptual content being clear and concise. If the designer can be clear on design intent with one plan, and a series of perspectives, vignettes, and sketches, please do so. If the designer is more concerned with overall site planning and massing forms, they should figure a way to portray that on their board and to the jurors.
The most important aspect for this competition is to have fun and bring some new and exciting visions to the “Pop-Up” movement. While this is an architectural competition, we stress not to get tied up in creating CD quality plans, elevations, and sections, but rather drawings that showcase your design skills.
Your Design Should be Focused Around:
The “Pop-Up” Movement:
- What makes a “Pop-Up” Thrive?
- How Can it Positively Impact a Community?
- Can it Be Used By Many Different Cultures, Ages, Genders and Abilities?
- What types of communities would your “Pop-Up” work best in?
- Materials & Transportation:
- Is it easily collapsible?
- Can it be taken apart and reconstructed easily (and how many people are needed)?
- Can it withstand the elements?
- What materials would work best?
*Note: Be selective about which materials you choose, and how they relate to being moved around to different areas and surroundings.
